Arcanist class in ESO Necrom – What is it?

Rejoice, heroes of Tamriel! We'll have a new champion by our side in our journey to the Telvanni Peninsula and beyond! Meet Arcanist, a mysterious magician who knows a bit more about the lands we'll soon visit than most of us. It's been some time since we've got a whole new class in Elder Scrolls Online. However, this is not the first time we get such an addition to our lineup: we first got a Warden in 2017 (Morrowind), then Necromancer in 2019 (Elsweyr). And now, 4 more years later, we get an Arcanist in Necrom: Shadow of Morrowind. And of course everyone is excited. So in this brief blog post we'll tell you all that's known so far about the biggest feature of the new chapter.

What is Arcanist?

Arcanist is a brand new character class in ESO. Arcanists' power is sourced by the Hermaeus Mora realm of Oblivion. Just like any other class in the game, it can be any of the 3 roles: a tank, a healer, or a damage dealer. It's yet to be seen which of those 3 work best for arcanist but there's no doubt that all of them will be suitable for a casual solo adventure.

So the 3 roles are reflected in 3 skill lines that have their own unique (and rather long and complex) names:

  • Herald of the Tome (damage)
  • Curative Runeforms (healing)
  • Soldier of Apocrypha (defence)
Each of them has their own unique set of abilities (5), passives (4), and an ultimate (1). You're not obliged to stick to a pure role – you can combine skills from all the skill lines.

To give you a better idea of what to expect from the new class, the developers have released an introductory video:

What is its gameplay like?

The biggest new feature of the class is the so-called Crux. There are 3 such Cruxes that you can accumulate and then use. Some abilities consume them, some abilities restore them. As far as we can tell right now, it's not going to be the primary resource – magicka will serve as the primary one. Crux is a secondary resource that will help you be more effective and diversify your gameplay.

You can learn more about Crux in this video by Grave Gaming:

Should I try it?

You absolutely should! Not only has it a fresh and exciting gameplay with all those Cruxes flying around, but also it might be a top choice for the meta during the first months of its existence. That is, the new class is quite often the strongest one and you shouldn't miss your opportunity to deal lots of damage and do other stuff better than anyone else. For once playing a (slightly) overpowered class is not a bad thing per se! That's a guilty pleasure we can all let ourselves have every once in a while. Check out this video by Deltia's Gaming to learn what he thinks about the potential of the class:

All in all, the new class looks really exciting and we can't wait to try it out! It's always great to log into ESO on the day of a big launch and Necrom won't be an exception, we're sure!
