Destiny 2 New Expansion "Lightfall" – What does it feature?

Another year, another expansion in Destiny 2. Some things don't change and thankfully that's one of them. Or so it will be for a couple more years. Unfortunately for the fans of the game, the developers – Bungie – announced that Lightfall is going to be the climax of the second part's story and we're likely to see the game leaving its routine content cycle quite soon. But it won't happen during Lightfall – which is the next expansion – and one more expansion after it. So it's safe to assume that we'll keep getting lots of fun stuff in the game until 2025. And we're sure that we won't be left deserted just like that. There'll be definitely more content to come.

Anyway, so much for the distant future, let's talk about something at hand. Lightfall is the upcoming expansion and it's about to launch really, really soon. It's less than a month between us and the release date. When exactly does it happen? What does this expansion bring? How much does it cost? And several more questions – all answered in this brief and sweet blog post!

What is the release date of Lightfall?

The Lightfall expansion goes live on February 28, 2023. The release date is the same for all platforms – hence, you'll be able to play your new version of Destiny 2 at once on, say, both your PC and PS5.

Season 28 starts simultaneously with the expansion. Its name is unknown yet, neither are its features. We're likely to learn those things only when the release of the season happens so don't expect either to surface anytime before that.

Also, note that there will be an almost a day of downtime before the expansion launch. So it would be wise to NOT plan any activities in Destiny on February 27 as you won't be able to log in for quite long.

What does Lightfall feature?

Although we don't know all the features of the expansion yet – Bungie seem to believe it's should be some sort of top-security intel before the very release – some things are known and we've composed a list of the most noteworthy additions (in our view):

  • New subclass: Strand
  • New location: Neomuna (cyberpunk city on the planet Neptune)
  • New campaign (coming with a legendary mode)
  • New Crucible map(s) (not known if they are part of the release content or should be expected later)
  • New progression system: Guardian Ranks
  • New armor: Apocalypse Apparel sets and more
  • New weapons: Final warning, Deterministic chaos, Winterbite, Lambent legend, more
  • New raid: the only thing we know about it is that it will arrive but no other info is available
  • New dungeons: coming some time later during the year (season 21 and 24 presumably)
That seems like a lot but we're likely going to get all that stuff in batches, not all at once. Just like it usually happens in Destiny 2. So we'd say you should consider the annual pass right away to make sure you're get all of those.

What is the pricing?

Just as it is common with all games rgese days, Destiny 2 Lightfall will have several pricing options. The base version of the expansion is $50.  The expansion + annual pass costs twice as much this time – it's  $100. Let's hope we'll be able to have twice as much content with it. Finally, there's the glorious collector's edition which comes with lots of physical stuff. You can have it either with a game code, or without it – just the physical stuff inside a box but NO game code. Make sure to read the description of a collector's box closely not to get the version you'd not want to have. The prices on them are different: the edition with the game costs $250, while the gameless one is $150. Naturally, the former comes with the annual pass.

As for what's inside the collector edition box, here's the list:

  • Official soundtrack of the expansion
  • A mesmerizing Pouka replica: shiny and with a stand
  • Books on Vanguard lore
  • Letter from Zavala
  • Lithograph
  • Vinyl sticker
  • Emblem
So as you can see it's lots of swag for fans of the lore / universe / series. If you're among them, hurry up to get your box before they are all gone!
