Endless Archive – What is this new ESO game mode?

The Endless Archive is an upcoming addition to the Elder Scrolls Online – and it's surely the one we're excited about most among those that have been recently announced. Although ESO is a well cared of game with frequent updates, thriving community, and plethora of content – it doesn't often offer new ways to enjoy the game. Especially not when it comes to free stuff that is not a part of yet another DLC / expansion. And yet here's Update 40 that will be available to anyone regardless of what paid content they have purchased. Let's take a closer look at what this new feature will be like in this brief but informative blog post!

What is the Endless Archive?

The Endless Archive is a randomly generated PvE instance that has lots of stages for you to beat. Some of them will feature groups of monsters, some will have bosses. It's highly likely that you'll never get 2 identical runs thanks to the mentioned randomness. But what that also means is that you can't actually prepare for a particular encounter. Hence, your performance in the Archive becomes a true display of skill and command of your class and spec. It's a good thing, of course, but that might make the Archive not exactly very accessible for more casual players. Which is alright since every category of players has something that they enjoy most and hardcore players deserve some love every now and then too.

If the preview of this activity has made you excited, here's something more that makes it even more appealing, in our opinion! You can venture into the depths of the Archive alone or in a group. That means that it's only up to you to decide if the Archive is a solo or team-based activity. It will work either way and the monsters / bosses will also adapt to the number of players. Will that make beating the Archive easier? Hardly, but it will definitely make it more fun since trying to find a way to defeat a particularly hard boss is much more pleasant in a company than on your own.

Here's a video showing some footage from the Archive as well as introducing several other additions of Update 40:

What rewards can I get there?

The most noteworthy Archive-related rewards that we've seen so far are unique class sets. You can purchase them with the new special currency Archive Fortunes. Quite expectedly, you earn it for running the Archive. You can buy cosmetic stuff with it too like style pages and other similar items that don't affect your combat performance. There's also a catalog of buffs that you can use on your following runs in the Endless Archive. Buying them is like investing in successfulness of your next run. Which is definitely a smart thing to do if you want to collect all the rewards from this new activity!

Here's what the class sets will look like, by the way (yeah, sorry for the quality. It's Bethesda's fault, as usual, since they can't seem to learn to upload high quality images. This problem persists for god knows how long already!):

How do I access it?

There are no prerequisites to enter the Endless Archive, you can start doing it as soon as it goes live. There might be some level limitations but that is to be expected since it looks like a high-end feature, not something fresh characters are meant to participate in.

Speaking of how you enter the Archive, there are 2 ways to do it. You can click it on the map and teleport there right away. Or you can literally enter it via a special entrance located in Apocrypha. Obviously, since Apocrypha is a DLC-restricted zone, you can't get there without purchasing the Necrom expansion, hence only those that have done that can go to the Archive by foot / mount.

When can I play it?

The Endless Archive is a part of Update 40 which is free for everyone who owns the Elder Scrolls Online. The testing of the patch started on September 18. The exact release date is yet to be announced but we'd say that it's quite possible that we'll get the Archive on live servers as soon as in October.
