Excavation & Scrying simple guide in ESO

Regardless of what your true north in Elder Scrolls Online is – whether it's hardcore raiding or furnishing up your glorious mansion – you can be certain that scrying and excavation will be of use to you. Powerful armor and weapons, popular in the current meta, or some silly collectibles that cheer you up – you can get it all. It's all about antiquities. If you think you're ready to unleash your inner Indiana Jones or Lara Croft and go treasure hunting, this little guide will become a perfect starting point for you. In few brief sections we describe the essentials of this process in ESO and give you several videos for a better idea of how it works. Let's go!

What are Antiquities in ESO?

Antiquities are the items that you can obtain by participating in treasure hunting. They mostly include cosmetics but there are also quite a few powerful combat-enhancing items on the list. For example, most players know what the Oakensoul Ring is and how powerful it is. Unlocking it won't be too simple though, as it includes scrying and excavating as many as 5 components each of which has a separate lead that you also have to find. We'll get to what it means exactly a little later but what you should understand now is that it's not fast nor easy to unlock the most valuable antiquities.

Here are several great Mythic items whose source is antiquities:

  • Harpooner's Wading Kilt (great for PvE)
  • Ring of the Pale Order (great for PvE)
  • Gaze of Sithis (PvP-favorite)
  • Death Dealer's Fete (an all-round mighty item)
And so on!

What is Scrying?

If you want to unlock antiquities, you first have to do some scrying. There's an entire UI for it where yo can see scryable items. To add items on the list, you first need to find the so-called leads. Treat leads as quest-starting items. There's a variety of different sources that they can come from and if you're interested in a particular lead, you should always check what the source of it is. It's absolutely impossible to guess.

To make a lead scryable, you should first go to the zone where it's supposed to be located. Once you've got there, click the lead that you need and something interesting will happen. You'll be taken to a screen with the scrying mini-game. There are 6 power-points on the board and you have to connect as many of them as possible within the turn limit.

Your result has a direct impact on what you'll have to do next: if you've successfully linked all 6 power-points, the exact location of the lead will be unveiled on your map. If you connect, say, 5 of them – you'll get 2 such points on the map and one of them will be false. But you won't be able to tell which one before you actually get there. And so it goes: if you've connected just 4 – you'll get 3 spots to visit, if 3 – 4 spots, and so on. Naturally, it's not very hard to travel to several regions of the zone but it's always preferable to head to the one right spot right away.

What is Excavation?

When you get to the spot where the lead is, you'll have to dig. To start digging, you first have to interact with the pile of earth in the excavation site. It starts another mini-game, this time dedicated to excavation. You have several tools to choose from – brush, big spade, etc – and a square of dirt and rocks to look or the treasure in. You need to understand which zones to work with – tools will help you with that. And when it becomes clear, just start digging and raise the new-found antiquity just like the trophy that it is. Repeat it all a million times and become a happy collector of rare stuff.

Here's an example of the full process:

How do I level it all up fast?

You might have already guessed that it all takes some time. To scry and excavate truly powerful items that are deemed strong enough to be a part of a BIS set, you need to level up both skills to level 7. That means you'll have to dig out so many various pieces of furniture and whatnot...

Worry not! Even though some people might find this process fun, not everyone is like that. If you're not very thrilled with looking for diamonds in the mud, we understand you. And that's why we are happy to offer you some help from our professional players. You can call them professional diggers in this context.  Regardless of which reward you're looking for, we'll be happy to get it to you much sooner than you would have obtained it yourself. We're not daring you to compete – it's just that our pros are extremely good at what they do and few people can keep up with them!
