GTA 6 – What do we know so far?

Grand Theft Auto 6 is certainly one of the most expected game of our time. Maybe of all times, actually. And as of now (April 2024) we only have one trailer of it! A fantastic and electric trailer, we'll give it that, but that's so not enough! By the way, let's give the trailer another watch:

That's right, pure joy. And now let's talk about what we already know about the game to see where we're currently standing.

Platforms

So far only 2 platforms have been confirmed for GTA 6 and we're really sorry for our friends who stick to PC. That's right, a PC release of the game hasn't been confirmed yet – that leaves us with Playstation 5 and Xbox Series S / X.

So if you still prefer the previous generation of consoles – Playstation 4 and Xbox One – perhaps you'll soon need to move on. This massive release will be unreachable for you if you stick to your guns. And if you're the fan of the series, you won't want to miss all the fun!

The prospects of GTA 6 coming to PS4 and Xbox One are very, very bleak and we're almost certain that won't happen. But we're more optimistic about PC. We believe that there's a high chance of GTA 6 coming to it a year later or a couple of years later. Similarly to how it was with the previous game – the PC version came out roughly a year and a half after the original console release.

Release Date

So far we don't have the exact release date. However, what we do have is Rockstar's statement on the official promo website of the game: coming 2025.

That's literally the only fact we have so far. There have been numerous speculations about the timeframe that the game can get released in 2025 but none of them is based on anything substantial. In March 2024 there was always a discussion of a possible delay but there was nothing to confirm it either.

Setting

Here's a list of things that we do know for a fact:

  • GTA 6 is set in Vice City;
  • Similarly to GTA 5, we'll get to see some of the city's surroundings: the Vice-Dale county and, perhaps, several more parts of the Leonida state;
  • the events of the game's story take place in the present day
Yeah, the list isn't very long right now but, unfortunately, it's exhaustive. Some people have already made lots of assumptions about what we'll see in the game based on the only trailer that we have access to as of April 2024. For examples, certain locations of Vice city that have already been features in previous games have been allegedly spotted by some members of the community. Those findings don't change much – they just prove that the game development team wants to bring us the city in all its glory: with all the things we already love about it and all the things that the team wants us to discover there.

Characters

The game will have 2 main protagonists: a man and a woman. We don't know much about them except that their names are Jason and Lucia. Also we get some of the latter's backstory from the reveal trailer: she's obviously spent some time in prison.

Does the couple have a romantic relationship though? It's highly likely. But since we're used to all kinds of surprises from Rockstar's storytelling, we'd not claim that it's 100% the case. The couple has already been compared to Bonnie and Clyde by many based on the trailer scene in which they participate in crime together.

We'd assume that GTA 6 will have a multi-character story experience similar to that of its predecessor. In GTA 5 we had 3 protagonists that we unlocked over time: Franklin, Michael, and Trevor. GTA 6 might have something similar in store and maybe it will not only be focus on the 2 already mentioned character.

Gameplay Features

No particular gameplay features have been confirmed so far. But here's what people talk about:

  • The gameplay will likely be similar to that of GTA 5 and, to some extend, Red Dead Redemption 2, the latest major game of the studio. So it's going to be an action adventure game with shooting, driving, and running enterprises;
  • The open world of the game will be vast and highly interactive. The reveal trailer gave us the idea of scope: Vice city's streets, Caribbean beaches, woods, marshes with alligators, and numerous other locations to visit. And we don't even know what fraction of the game's content we've been shown so far;
  • The online mode hasn't been officially confirmed yet but it's quite likely that we'll have something similar to GTA Online. We don't know whether the online mode comes out at once with the game or whether it comes a bit later. We also don't know how the current GTA Online will be treated: will it remain a separate thing or will it somehow evolve into GTA 6 Online? That's certainly something to watch;
  • The earliest game leaks had information that GTA 6 will feature several major locations, that is it won't be one city centred like most previous games of the franchise were. Say, GTA 5 is a game focused on Los Santos and we barely get to see anything other than that. GTA 4 was about Liberty City. So there can be a chance that we'll have at least another major map in GTA 6, not just Vice city and it's surroundings. Perhaps, something similar to Red Dead Redemption 2 with several vast maps?
Mind you that if we don't state that something has been officially confirmed, then you shouldn't treat it as a fact! There are so many speculations surrounding the game right now – mainly due to the lack of any substantial information. And we can see why that happens: after more than 10 years of waiting people are hungry to learn everything there's to learn about the next opus of their favourite game studio. We can't blame them!
