Necromancer in Diablo 4: What is it like and is it good?

Diablo 4 is going to feature lots of stuff that is essential for the franchise – including classes. 5 of them, to be precise. One of the most welcomed members of the team is the Necromancer, of course. A class that had an entire separate DLC for it in Diablo 3 and that was a fan favourite in Diablo 2 Resurrected. Necro has really had a long history in the Diablo franchise and fortunately that history is going to develop in the newest installation of the series. What do we know about it so far? Will it be the same as in Diablo 3 or 2? Or will it be completely reimagined? Let's take a closer look at the Necromancer class in the upcoming Diablo 4.

What is Necromancer in Diablo 4?

Necromancer is the grimmest class of the Diablo 4 lineup. Veterans of the franchise know him very well since it's been in present in all the parts of the series except the first one. But for those of you who are new to Diablo, we'll make a brief introduction. But first here's a brief video by Blizzard to have a better idea of the aesthetics:

The Necromancer is a morose dark mage who's not afraid of visiting graveyards at night and not just that! In fact, the Necromancer feels quite at home at such places as all their power comes from the dead. Building an army of skeletons or zombies? Yes, your Necro can do that. Using some shadowy magic to annihilate your foes and explode their, well, corpses? No problem with that too. If such aesthetics seems appealing to you – and since you've chosen to play a Diablo game, we'd bet it might – or if you just want to play one of the strongest classes in the game at the moment, the Necromancer might be your best choice for the first game completion. Let's learn more about what makes it so good.

What is its gameplay like?

The Necromancer in Diablo 4 is pretty versatile in how you can play it. It's not just about skeletons and corpse-bombs. There are 4 playstyles that you can choose from:

  • Blood
  • Bone (yes, this is a real name for it that the devs came up with)
  • Darkness
  • The Army (no idea why the definite article)
They all have their merits and they all make your gameplay different. Blood, somewhat surprisingly for new players, is almost a pure tank spec. You get lots of spells that scale off your health pool so you need to have lots of health which makes you chonky (that is, well-defended). You also need to learn how to position your character in combat as some spells deal more damage or other impact when you have lots of enemies nearby. Also, a big number of your blood spells restore your health. So yes, it's like being a real tank yet still doing decent damage, A great safe option for whoever is new to the genre.

The Bone spec has the stupidest name a spec could only have. Like, bone what? Well, nevermind. It's basically a damage-focused spec that lets you do tons of damage to your enemies. It also offers some peculiar types of crowd control with the so-called bone cages that can help you keep particularly nasty enemies far from your character. This spec might be harder for newcomers but if mastered, it can speed up any dungeon run or other high-end activity immensely with how much damage you deal.

Darkness is a complicated spec that has a great potential. It focuses on dealing damage-over-time to your enemies and applying various curses on them. Combat pace will feel somewhat strange at first but you'll soon get used to it. It's an interesting spec but it might be not the strongest and the most accessible one. But if you want to enjoy an unusual skill set and an exotic playstyle, this might be your road to take.

Finally, The Army (yes, with the "the") is what we all prepared for when we heard that the Necromancer would be in the game. Summoning skeletons, zombies, golems, ghouls, and whatnot to fight for you. And you, the overlord of this unholy squad, control your minions and make hostile stupid zombies fight your stupid zombies instead of yourself. Quite smart! This might not be the best option for speedruners but the gameplay is really exciting!

Although you can definitely built a pure specialization for each of those 4 playstyle, nothing can stop you from combining elements of them all. Like, you can have perks and spells from 2 or 3 of them, or even all 4. See how you can balance it all out for you to enjoy the game and that's it! Diablo 4 offers lots of flexibility in this regard and that's what makes this new game so good, in our view. Take a look at some particular builds in this video:

What resource does Necromancer use?

The Necromancer has 2 resources: essence and, ehm, corpses. Essence is sorta mana but can be restored in many more ways than usual. And corpses are corpses – of your enemies, that is. With certain tricks you can increase their number – and that doesnt

What items does Necromancer use?

The signature weapon for the class is scythes. They are unique to the Necromancer and no other class can equip them. As for common weapon types, you can use swords, daggers, wands, focuses, and shields. Speaking of armor, your choice should depend on your build. There are several of them and the choices vary drastically based on which one you decide to stick to. Here's a video by Gamespot to help you better understand Necro's main features:

What was Necromancer like in the beta?

The Necromancer was a superstar during the beta! Everyone called them an overpowered and imbalanced monster capable of destroying anything in its way. Here are some video proofs.
