NW Doesn't Have Mounts and That's Good. Here's Why

.

You don't need mounts in New World. Here's why.

As soon as Amazon's huge new game went live, players started complaining about numerous things. And although feedback is a healthy thing, there are some discussions that are not so simple and one of them drew our attention.

Mounts. Or rather, the absence of them in New World made some players vocally unhappy. But we strongly believe that there's no real reason to be unhappy about that. We'd like to talk about why games have mounts, how New World does without them, and whether games should have them at all.

1. How Other Games Do It

↑ Back to the top ↑

What is the primary purpose of mounts? Carrying your character to the destination faster. They mainly make sense in RPGs or action games where you have some sort of an interactive world around your character and some parts of that world are somewhat empty. Your gaming experience in those games is not really continuous: not every step of your way counts, you can skip some boring or annoying parts of it, and so on. So mounts help you skip it all by giving you a faster travelling speed.

Since the game world is interactive, you can interact with your mount as well. Most notably, you can customize it. Be it any GTA game or WoW, or Cyberpunk – you can pimp your ride in any of those. The ways to customize your mount are limited and not equal: some can be easily obtained and used by almost anyone, some are pretty difficult to get and can be used to show off your hard-earned achievements, and some are bought from the in-game store with real money. So here comes a second purpose: you can use them to have some social impact, to tell other players who you are without talking to them.

Sometimes – unfortunately not too often – mounts also offer you some additional abilities. The best example here is Guild Wars 2, where mounts were added not too long ago and were made really useful. So one mount can leap over chasms, another can fly, another can glide, and so on.

So let's conclude. There are 3 things mounts can do in video games:

a. Increase your moving speed
b. Show your status to other players
c. Give you unique additional skills

How does New World handle all these things?

2. How New World Does It

↑ Back to the top ↑

New World is a typical MMORPG, so all the features we mentioned above (interactive world, empty spaces, etc) apply to it as well. But what does it do better (or just differently) to avoid using mounts?

a. FASTER TRAVELING

First of all, it gives you a simple fast travelling tool that covers the speed-increase part. Yes, you still have places to walk to, but the distances are much shorter than in many other games and you would really like to not skip them. After all, picking up or destroying whatever you have in your way is one of the core parts of the game. That means that New World has more important content per square meter than many other games. But we're also sure that as soon as the current content (and current essential resources) become outdated, mounts will most likely be introduced to speed up leveling through older zones.

Fast traveling works in a very simple way: you get to any settlement, open the map, click on any other previously discovered town, and within a couple of seconds you're there. Yes, you need to spend some Azoth on it, but the price of a single trip is rather low (if your faction owns the zone you're planning to go to), so it will hardly ever be an obstacle.

b. SHOWING OFF

New World doesn't lack things that you can use to show off. So there are dyes, skins, and various house equipment, all of which you can either craft, or buy from an in-game store with real money, or obtain as a reward for doing something remarkable.

Sure, mounts might have been an easier status indicator, but trying to find another way to make people see your achievements is laudable. Hence, kudos to Amazon.

c. ADDITIONAL SKILLS

New World doesn't really need those at the moment. The majoirty of players still don't know what skills their weapons have and how many ways to interact with the world there are in the game already. Exploration should come little by little, and the longer the game stays relevant, the more additional skills there will be. So extended functionality is not something a brand new game is expected to have.

With all that said, we'd also like to draw your attention at how the absence of mounts makes the game a little bit different from, say, WoW and other currently popular MMO RPGs and action games.

3. PvP Missions

↑ Back to the top ↑

The spirit of PvP is conflict. Conflict means constant combat that evolves with those who take part in it. And when you simply can summon a mount and easily make your way out of the danger, does it really make the game more thrilling? We don't think so.

PvP missions are meant to be dangerous for your character, you should be vigilant and ready for action – that's what they are by design. And that's exactly how PvP missions without mounts play out. They are significantly more engaging than they could have been – compare them with anything similar in WoW. Many PvP activities in WoW degraded to riding from point A to point B without any skirmishes – just look at the pitiful sight that Alterac Valley is nowadays.

And it won't make much sense to say that mounts could help non-PvP players to escape ambushes or something, because in New World you can easily switch PvP from on to off in any town and carry on with your questing or resource farming. You won't even have PvP on in the first place, unless you want it. Hence, those 2 worlds – of savage ubiquitous PvP and of peaceful minding-my-own-business – exist in harmony and everyone gets what they want without being harrassed by the others. Will that last? We'll see.

4. Should Games Have Mounts at All?

↑ Back to the top ↑

Mounts are not necessarily evil. They might be a pretty awesome addition to a game but sometimes developers use them in a pretty lazy way which hardly makes the game more fun. We believe that there are roughly 3 ways that developers usually treat mounts in games.

First, the one that we don't support: adding lots of mounts that only differ in their appearance. That just increases their number but makes each of them less valuable. WoW walks that road, even though Blizzard sometimes add some diversity: the latest cool additions were a huge dinosaur with a unique model that carried your personal auction house on its back and a skeletal hound that could be used in a zone where other mounts were not allowed. However, Blizzard later removed the former and made the latter less important. Instead of making mounts more fun, they keep introducing absolutely meaningless mounts in huge quantities, adding some of them to their real-money store. Thus, they make collecting mounts in some sense one of the biggest parts of their content which could make sense for a Pokemon game, but hardly does it in an MMORPG.

Second, the middle way that seems like a smart compromise: adding few mounts with unique abilities. That's how Guild Wars 2 does it and it's a great thing. Mounts there are not just vanity items or something only collectors care about, they are unique useful tools that make you a more versatile player. And they are not compulsory at all: the game is easily playable without even a single mount. Naturally, there are some vanity-item features too, but those are mainly about mount skins, not about mounts themselves. And the skins are primarily obtainable from the in-game store which might seem greedy but well, such are the times we're living in.

Lastly, there's the New World's way which is just to reject mounts altogether and find another way to handle their functions. Why not, it sounds like an interesting way to deal with it. So far this experiment seems to be working. Guild Wars 2 also started like that and people didn't really suffer from it.

You see, the problem is not about mounts: it's about long and useless distances that you have to cross and lack of really exciting and meaningful content in games. New World tries to avoid those things and if it succeeds, players will not be likely to even recall this discussion. Let's hope that Amazon will keep it up and find smart ways to develop the game, not the lazy and lousy ones.
