Rockgrove Armor Sets – How are they good?

Rockgrove remains one of the hardest trial in the game and its rewards are up to its standards. So if you're looking for powerful armor sets, visiting vRG would be a smart thing to do! As it's usually the case with this type of PvE activities, there are 4 different sets here + their perfected versions that are only obtainable from the veteran version of the trial. Let's list them all:

  • Saxhleel Champion (heavy armor)
  • Sul-Xan's Torment (medium)
  • Bahsei's Mania (light DPS)
  • Stone-Talker's Oath (light support)
As you can see, there are 3 armor types. The heavy and medium ones get one set each, while the light one has as many as 2. However, either of those 2 light armor sets are meant for different types of players. One is for DPS champions while the other is for support-focused ones. We'll take a closer look at each of this set, their bonuses, and their visuals in dedicated sections below!

Saxhleel Champion (Heavy)

Contrary to how it often is, this heavy-weight armor set is not really for tanks. It's mostly for supports who want to have more resilience but not miss out on utility. The stats and bonuses are not what you'll see every day, so we'd say that this set suits more experienced players better since they know how to make the most out of it. Nevertheless, this set is definitely a great addition to your collection regardless of your skill level.

So what's with the bonuses? The set's initial bonus (2 items) increases your champion's store of magicka. The 3-item effect gets you the permamnet Minor Aegis buff (-5% damage from PvE monsters); the 4-item one gets you more stamina. The perfected set doubles down on that by adding even more stamina with its 5-item bonus. And finally, the ultimate 5-item bonus provides you and your team (up to 11 allies) with the Major Force buff that improves your critical damage (+20%). The buff is triggered when you use your ultimate abilities. Its duration depends on the amount of the ultimate resource spent: 1 second for each 15 ultimate spent on the ability. The critical damage increase is insane, so that's the biggest selling point of this set.

Sul-Xan's Torment (Medium)

This medium set is all about increasing your damage so get ready to kick asses! It starts with a 2-item bonus that adds weapon or spell damage to your current stats. The 3-item effect gets you the Minor Slayer buff that is active all the time and gives you 5% more damage against opponents in trials, dungeons, and arenas. If you get one more item, you'll get a 4-item bonus that gives you more critical chance. The perfected set's bonus (5 items) gives you even more crit chance. As you might have noticed, at least 2 Rockgrove's sets are focused on the critical chance. And that's not where this crit chance thing ends for this set.

Let's take a closer look at the ultimate bonus. Whenever an enemy that has suffered damage from you dies, the so-called "vengeful soul" spawns. It only exists 6 seconds and can be only one – you can't create more than 1 such soul no matter how many opponents you have downed. What does this vengeful soul do? Touch it to see! Your critical chance and critical damage stats both get an upgrade. The former gets a flat number increase (up to 2'160) and the later gets a 12% boost. Although those enhancements are already quite great, wait till you see the duration – it's 30 seconds. An entire half a minute. That's how much time you have to do your damage boost during a boss fight or something. Can anything match that? Well, just few things can.

Bahsei's Mania (Light DPS)

We'll start with the DPS-focused lightweight set. Unlike the previous two, it's not really something out of the ordinary. Its ultimate bonus is peculiar but otherwise the set is quite normal. So here's what to expect: the 2-item bonus increases your weapon or spell damage. The 3-piece bonus grants you the Minor Slayer buff that makes your character stronger against PvE monsters in dungeons, trials, and arenas. The 4-piece effect improves your critical chance and the 5-piece perfected effect gives you even more weapon / spell damage. Quite a regular bunch of bonuses, isn't it? Now let's look at something a bit more unique.

The ultimate 5-piece bonus increases your damage to hostile NPCs by up to 12%. The exact increase depends on the missing magicka. So basically the more you cast spells, the more damage you will produce. This bonus encourages you to avoid full magicka and constantly keep it below 100% with your spells. Naturally, it won't be possible without decent magicka regen – but that's what your support allies should take care of. If they do, this set might take you to the top of the DPS list at boss fights. And speaking of support allies...

Stone-Talker's Oath (Light Support)

Finally, we've come to the fourth set of the four. Like the heavy one at the beginning of the list (Saxheel Champion), it's something that a support champion would enjoy using. However, this is a much more straightforward support set, although it has its own peculiarities. Let's see: the first bonus (2 pieces) improves your magicka recovery, so does the 4-item one. The 3-item effect provides you with the Minor Aegis buff that reduces incoming damage from mobs by 5%. The perfected additional 5-item bonus also raises your maximum magicka. And the ultimate 5-item bonus is something special.

So as you've collected 5 items of either the regular, or the perfected set, you get a peculiar effect that is triggered by your fully charged heavy attacks. The target of the attack gets a soul bomb attached to them.It goes off after 10 seconds and recovers 5% of the damage received in the form of magicka and stamina to your teammates. As many as 12 of them can feel the benefit of the explosion – that is, the entire trial group. However, they should all stand somewhat close to the soul bomb as it has a particular area of effect – it's 16 meters. The maximum amount of magicka and stamina restored is 2'240. The effect can repeat every 10 seconds, so you can just throw those bombs at each cooldown. Needless to say, it all looks like a really useful thing that makes your team's spell resources easier to restore, hence they will cast spells more often too. In the end that means that your whole team will deal more damage on average.

So all in all, these 4 sets are really great. Some of them are pretty normal but the bonuses they give are quite strong, while some of them are really like few others (Saxheel Champion in particular). Perhaps, Rockgrove won't be your trial of choice if you prefer playing as a tank but for supports this place is definitely worth visiting.
